If your English course in Malaysia lasts more than 3 months, you need a Student Pass. Your school applies for it through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), the official agency for international students, while you are still in your home country. Most students get approval in 4 to 6 weeks once all documents are complete.
This guide explains who needs the pass, the steps, the documents, the rules for language centre students and the mistakes that cause delays. It is written for students joining a language centre such as Excel Language Center in Kuala Lumpur, but most points apply to any private language school in Malaysia.
Do you need a student visa for an English course?
It depends on how long you will study.
- More than 3 months: you need a Student Pass. This is the normal route for students who plan 4, 6 or 12 months of English.
- 3 months or less: you may be able to study on a social visit pass, depending on your nationality. Some nationalities need a visa even to visit, so check the Immigration Department of Malaysia's list for your passport.
A Student Pass for an English programme is usually issued for up to 12 months, depending on the study period approved. It can be renewed if you continue studying.
Step by step: how the student visa works
- Choose your course and start date. At Excel, new classes start every month and you are placed in one of 12 levels after a free English level test.
- Receive your offer letter from the school.
- Send your documents to the school. The school checks them and submits your application to EMGS. Immigration Malaysia requires you to be outside Malaysia when the application is submitted.
- EMGS reviews your application and runs its checks. EMGS says a complete application is processed in about 14 working days.
- You receive the visa approval letter (often called the eVAL). If your nationality needs a visa to enter Malaysia, you also apply for a single entry visa using this letter.
- Fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within 3 days before your flight. It is required for foreign travellers.
- Arrive in Malaysia. At Kuala Lumpur International Airport, EMGS has an arrival centre for international students.
- Do your medical screening at an EMGS-approved clinic within 7 working days of arrival.
- Your passport is endorsed with the Student Pass sticker, and your i-Kad student card is issued.

Documents you will need
Prepare clear colour scans. Requirements can change, and some nationalities are asked for more, but most students need:
- Passport: a copy of the photo page. Immigration Malaysia's list for higher education students asks for a passport valid for at least 18 months, so renew it first if it expires soon.
- Passport-size photo with a white background.
- Academic certificates and transcripts from your last school or university, with an English translation if needed.
- Offer letter from the school.
- Health insurance recognised in Malaysia. EMGS sells 12-month plans, or your school can arrange one.
- Medical screening: done after arrival at an approved clinic.
Students under 18 need extra documents and a guardian arrangement.
How long does it take?
EMGS aims to decide a complete application in 14 working days. In practice, allow 4 to 6 weeks from the day your documents are complete: documents are checked, the approval letter is issued, you may need an entry visa, and you need time to book flights.
Our advice: apply about 2 months before your start date. Excel has an intake every month, so if your visa takes longer you can simply start the next month instead of losing your place.
Rules to know before you come
- No work: Immigration Malaysia does not allow language centre students to work part-time.
- No dependants: language centre students cannot bring a spouse or children on their pass.
- Attendance matters: your pass depends on studying the course it was approved for, so keep attending classes.
- Keep your passport valid for the whole stay, and start a renewal well before your pass ends if you plan to continue.
Common mistakes that delay a visa
- Sending blurry scans or a passport that expires within 18 months.
- Booking non-refundable flights before the approval letter arrives.
- Travelling on a tourist entry and planning to "change" to a student pass inside Malaysia. You must apply from outside.
- Leaving it too late: the weeks before popular intakes are the busiest.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a student visa for a 1-month English course in Malaysia?
Usually not. Excel's rule of thumb, based on Malaysian immigration practice, is that a Student Pass is needed for courses longer than 3 months. Students staying 3 months or less may study on a social visit pass, depending on nationality. Check Immigration Malaysia's visa list for your passport, and ask us before you book flights.
How long does the Malaysian student visa take for a language course?
EMGS says it processes a complete application in about 14 working days. With document checks, the approval letter and travel planning, allow 4 to 6 weeks. Apply about 2 months before your intake so a delay doesn't cost you a month of classes.
Can I work while studying English in Malaysia?
No. The Immigration Department of Malaysia allows part-time work only for some university and college students. Students at language centres are not permitted to work, so plan your budget before you arrive.
Can I apply for the student pass after arriving in Malaysia?
No. Immigration Malaysia states that applicants must be outside Malaysia when the application is submitted. Your school submits it while you are still in your home country.
Is there an age limit for a student visa for an English course?
At Excel, student visa applications for English programmes are generally accepted from age 18. Applicants under 18 need extra documents and a guardian arrangement, so contact us first.
What happens after I land in Malaysia?
Fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before you fly. After arrival, do your medical screening at an EMGS-approved clinic within 7 working days. Then your passport is endorsed with the Student Pass sticker.
